The dust of the holiday season has finally settled, and I’ve been meaning to expand on this list I posted on social media a few days ago. Enjoy.
in
friends to lovers (and making friends fall in love): There’s something special about watching friends cross the line from platonic to romantic. Maybe it’s because the foundation is already there: trust, inside jokes, and the comfortable silence you can only have with someone who really gets you.
your gut feeling: We’ve all got this internal compass that somehow knows which way to go, but we spend so much time polluting it with pros-and-cons lists and other people’s opinions. Look for the signal in the noise and turn up the volume of your inner voice.
Matty Healy and Matthew McConaughey: Two guys who operate on their own wavelength, unbothered by the chatter of public opinion. Healy’s unapologetic stage presence and McConaughey’s “just keep living” philosophy — they’re walking different paths but sharing the same energy. It’s a rare combination of self-awareness and complete surrender to who they are. You can learn a lot from them.
themed parties and being a host: Creating moments for the people in your life hits different than just showing up to them. Whether it’s dinner parties or karaoke nights, the best conversations and connections start with someone deciding to be the host.
being brave: Bravery lives in the moments when you choose the uncomfortable path. It’s hitting publish on an idea, or telling someone how you really feel. Life comes with a spectrum of emotions, and you should shoot for all of them.
blowing kisses: It’s such a small gesture that feels like it’s from another time.
YSL and Levi’s: Luxurious in the winter, laid-back in the summer.
leather and white shirts: When everyone is obsessed with the next trend, there’s power in knowing your classics — the pieces that make you feel like yourself every single time you put them on.
evenings: Mornings get all the glory, but evenings? That’s when the real stuff happens. What starts as dinner with friends evolves into drinks and conversations about life as you wander through lit-up streets with nowhere particular to be. It’s amazing what your mind can dream up in these hours.
old souls: It wouldn’t do them justice to explain this one.
writing/pen and paper: This is somewhat meta, but I’ve recently bought a new notebook and a really, really good pen and have found a lot of joy in documenting my thoughts on something physical. I had forgotten how quickly writing puts my brain into idea mode.
(healthy) obsession: Getting deeply and intensely interested in things is a gift that not everyone is able to experience. Don’t forget that.
out
assumptions: Our minds love to run wild with “what if” scenarios. Reality usually turns out different — and often better — than what we imagined.
buzzcuts: Some trends need to stay in 2024.
optimization anxiety: Not everything has to be optimized, automated, or improved. Sometimes a process works because of its inefficiencies, not despite them. Sometimes “good enough” is actually perfect.
algorithmic taste: When was the last time you went to a record store to discover new music?
choosing ease over intention: Easy choices make for boring stories.
TikTok: What started as a creative platform has devolved into an endless stream of recycled content. Original voices are drowning in a sea of copycats and slop.
(unhealthy) obsession: There’s a fine line between passion and fixation. Recognizing that is the first step to learning where that line is.
Happy new year.
